OCA partners with EDI Global, Christian Halls and Metropolitan Community College’s Kickstart Online Institute (KSOI) to offer students the opportunity to earn college credit while in high school. Students who are interested in taking college courses may elect to take a Study Hall while completing their online coursework. Credits earned will not count towards high school graduation requirements or impact a student’s high school GPA. Completed college courses will be indicated on student transcripts in the Notes section. Payment for all college courses takes place directly with the institution. Students who are successful in online courses are self-motivated, organized, and good communicators. Please consult your school counselor to determine which courses are the best fit for your future educational and vocational goals.
Metropolitan Community College: These online courses are offered in a 15-week format and earn college credit that can be transferred to many four-year institutions. Courses are offered at $32 per credit hour (half of the standard rate of tuition), plus any additional textbook and material fees. Registration is due January 11, 2021. - Introduction to Business – BUSI 1173
This course is an introduction to business principles and practices. Topics include forms of business ownership, ethics and social responsibility, the business environment, and an introduction to the functional areas of business. Class 3. - Computer Science – COSC 1303
An introduction to the field of computer science. Problem solving strategies, basic data structures, and an introduction to algorithms in the context of a modern programming language. A study of algebra beginning with signed numbers through quadratic equations, including algebraic expressions, factoring, linear equations, linear inequalities, linear functions, and systems of equations in
two variables. Required of all students whose ACT/SAT scores indicate deficiency in algebra. Can only apply to general elective credit. Class 3. - Trigonometry – MATH 1252
A study of the trigonometric functions, identities, solving triangles, inverse trigonometric functions, and complex numbers. Class 2. Prerequisite(s): MATH 1123 or equivalent. - Medical Terminology – HLSC 2033
An introductory study of the specific and technical vocabulary used in medicine. Students will learn common Latin and Greek prefixes, suffixes, and roots used in health-related communication. Skills will be developed in spelling, pronouncing and defining this type of terminology. Class 3. (Summer and Distance Learning) - Human Growth and Development – PSYC 2143
This course involves the study of biopsychosocial and spiritual aspects of development from birth to death. Through the examination of various theories and research, this course will allow students to experience a greater understanding of physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development through the lifespan. - Western Civilization I – HIS 111
This course is a survey of the history of Western Civilization from ancient Israel through the Renaissance that includes study of the art and architecture, speeches, political treatises, decisive battles, and daily economic decisions that shaped or characterized ancient Israel, classical Greece and Rome, and Christian Europe. It provides a framework for the integration and understanding of all other liberal arts. *Course material fee may apply. - College Writing – ENG 110
This required course helps students develop competence in the art of writing, with emphasis on the personal essay and storytelling. Students will then use those narrative skills to craft different types of essays, such as opinion-editorial pieces, reviews, and analytical papers. The course includes brief reviews of grammar and usage, frequent practice in writing compositions, workshops, and analysis of selected essays as models.
